The Pirates lost to the Cardinals, 9-5, but remained one game ahead in the East division race when rain prevented the Expos' scheduled twi-night doubleheader against the Braves in Atlanta. George Hendrick went 5-for-5, including a homer, and Tony Scott was 4-for-5 in the Cardinals' 17-hit attack on six Pirate pitchers. Dave Parker homered for the Pirates, who fell behind, 6-1, before rallying for two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh. Kent Tekulve, making his club record 92nd appearance of the season, was unable to stop the Cardinals from pulling away in the eighth. Tekulve hit Ken Oberkfell with a pitch with one out and then uncorked a wild pitch. After Mark Littell struck out, Garry Templeton doubled to score Oberkfell. Jerry Mumphrey singled to drive in Templeton. Hendrick capped the scoring with his homer off Enrique Romo in the ninth. [The Sporting News] |
