The Pirates clinched the East division championship by beating the Cubs. 5-3, as Willie Stargell and Bill Robinson drove in two runs apiece. The Pirates scored in the first inning when Tim Foli walked, moved to third on a single by Dave Parker and came home on a sacrifice fly by Stargell.

After Phil Garner drove in a run with a single in the fourth, a round-tripper by Stargell made it 3-0 in the fifth. Robinson drove in two tallies with a seventh-inning single.
