Steve Carlton ruined the Expos' hopes for the East division title by pitching the Phillies to a 2-0 victory with a three-hit, 12-strikeout performance. The veteran southpaw helped his own cause, hitting a single in the third inning, going to third on a double by Pete Rose and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bake McBride. The Phils' other run came in the sixth when Larry Bowa walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and tallied on a double by Greg Gross. [The Sporting News]
