The Phillies gained their first season-opening victory since 1974, defeating the Expos, 6-3, before a crowd of 48,460. Greg Luzinski started the Phils off to their triumph with a three-run homer in the first inning. Garry Maddox and Mike Schmidt walked with two out before Luzinski whacked his drive off Steve Rogers.

A mental lapse by the Expos on a rundown play enabled Larry Bowa to score in the fourth inning before the Phils completed their scoring with a pair of tainted tallies in the seventh. Gary Carter hit a two-run homer for the Expos. [The Sporting News]
