Big innings carried the Yankees to a doubleheader sweep of the Rangers, 9-4 and 8-2. The Yanks exploded for six runs in the fifth inning of the first game. A single by Rick Cerone, walk to Willie Randolph and single by Ruppert Jones loaded the bases. Two runs scored on a single by Oscar Gamble and after Bob Watson walked to reload the sacks, Jim Spencer followed with a grand-slam homer.

The Yanks decided the second game with four runs in the fifth inning. Bucky Dent, Jones and Gamble hit singles for one tally and Jones scored when Pepe Frias bobbled a grounder by Reggie Jackson. After Watson walked to load the bases, starter Gaylord Perry was relieved by Dave Rajsich, who uncorked a wild pitch that allowed one run to score. Catcher Dave Roberts then threw wildly, permitting another run to cross the plate. [The Sporting News]
