Jim Rooker was the star of the game as the Pirates beat the Cardinals, 3-0. The lefthanded pitcher, who bats righthanded, blasted a two-run homer following a one-out walk to Phil Garner in the seventh inning. Rooker allowed only five hits but was removed with two men on base and one out in the Cards' half of the seventh. Enrique Romo and Grant Jackson finished. The Pirates scored their first run in the fifth on a throwing error by Garry Templeton, hence there was no game-winning RBI under the new scoring rule. [The Sporting News]
