A solo homer by Bill Robinson off Bruce Sutter in the 10th inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Cubs, 5-4. Pirate reliever Kent Tekulve gained the decision, although giving up the Cubs' tying two runs in the ninth on singles by Bill Buckner, Dave Kingman and Ken Henderson and a pinch-double by Mike Vail.
