With Rick Matula pitching a five-hit shutout, the Braves gained their first victory of the season and handed the Reds their first defeat, 3-0. The Braves had lost their first seven games, while the Reds had won their first eight. Jerry Royster doubled and Biff Pocoroba singled in the fourth inning for the only run that Matula needed, but the Braves added a counter in the fifth before Dale Murphy wrapped it up with a homer in the eighth.
