With Rick Waits pitching a six-hitter, the Indians posted an 8-1 victory over the Blue Jays before a home-opening crowd of 61,753, largest in the major leagues this season. Ron Hassey drove in two of the Indians' runs with a double and Joe Charboneau accounted for two with a homer and single before Mike Hargrove ended the scoring with a three-run smash.
