Behind strong pitching by Jon Matlack, who got relief help from Sparky Lyle in the ninth inning, the Rangers posted a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. The Texans broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth on a walk to Bump Wills, a stolen base and single by Al Oliver. They added an insurance marker on a solo homer by Jim Sundberg in the seventh.
