A two-run double by Jason Thompson keyed a three-run first inning that propelled the Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Rangers. Lou Whitaker opened the game with an infield hit and Kirk Gibson followed with a bunt single. Steve Kemp then hit a grounder back to the mound, but pitcher Steve Comer threw wildly to second, allowing Whitaker to score. Thompson then drilled a two-bagger to plate both runners.
