Helped by two errors in the eighth inning, the Cardinals topped the Cubs, 3-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Silvio Martinez. The game was scoreless going into the eighth when Tony Scott stroked a leadoff single, took second when first baseman Bill Buckner made an errant throw on a bunt by Martinez and scored on a single by Garry Templeton.

Pitcher Mike Krukow then was charged with an error when he threw wildly on a bunt by Ken Oberkfell, allowing Martinez to score and Templeton to advance to third. A sacrifice fly by Bobby Bonds plated Templeton. [The Sporting News]
