Shut out for six innings, the Cubs erupted for four runs in the seventh and defeated the Pirates, 5-3, Jerry Martin singled, Barry Foote doubled, Carlos Lezcano hit a sacrifice fly and Mick Kelleher singled to tie the score at 2-2. Steve Dillard then batted for Rick Reuschel and singled to put the Cubs ahead and Lenny Randle followed with a single for another run. Dave Kingman homered for insurance in the eighth.
