Starring at bat and afield, Dave Kingman sparked the Cubs to a 4-2 triumph over the Cardinals. The big left fielder threw a runner out at the plate in the third inning and stroked a single that gave the Cubs the go-ahead run in the ninth.

The game was tied, 1-1, in the top of the ninth, when Ivan DeJesus drew a leadoff walk from reliever Bob Sykes. Bill Buckner reached base on a bunt single and Kingman then singled to center. Jerry Martin greeted reliever Donnie Moore with a two-bagger that plated Buckner, and Kingman tallied on a sacrifice fly by Tim Blackwell. [The Sporting News]
