The Cardinals knocked out Nolan Ryan during a seven-run outburst in the seventh inning and defeated the Astros, 9-1. Breaking a close game apart, the Cards began their big inning with a double by George Hendrick, run-scoring single by Ken Reitz and double by Tony Scott.

Ryan struck out Jim Kaat before giving way to Joe Sambito, who failed to retire any of four batters. Garry Templeton singled for one run and Ken Oberkfell walked to load the bases.
