The second game was played under a protest filed during the second inning when the Mets scored three runs. Mike Jorgensen singled and was sent to second by plate umpire Lanny Harris on an apparent balk. But second base ump Eric Gregg overruled Harris, noting that pitcher Rasmussen had taken a step back before the pickoff attempt. Padres Manager Jerry Coleman, who had been ejected for arguing the original balk call, then lodged his protest. When play resumed, Steve Henderson singled and Ron Hodges walked to load the bases.
