A two-run double by Ted Simmons keyed a five-run second inning that sent the Cardinals on their way to a 9-5 victory over the Giants. The Redbirds trailed, 5-2, going into the bottom of the second, when Tony Scott opened with an infield hit and Pete Vuckovich drew a base on balls.

A single by Garry Templeton scored Scott but Vuckovich was out trying to reach third on the hit, Templeton taking second on the play. Tommy Herr got a double when his hot smash went off shortstop Johnnie LeMaster's glove, sending Templeton to third. A single by Keith Hernandez drove in Templeton and sent Frisco starter Vida Blue to the showers. Simmons rapped the first offering of reliever Tom Griffin into the right field corner to put the Cards ahead, 6-5, and an RBI single by Ken Reitz capped the outburst. [The Sporting News]
