A two-run pinch-double by Harry Spilman in the 14th inning gave the Reds a 12-10 victory over the Mets in a four-hour, 37-minute marathon. Ray Knight and Sam Mejias opened the frame with singles. After Dan Driessen and Junior Kennedy struck out, Spilman dumped a ball into right field for the game-winning blow. The Mets had deadlocked the contest with three runs in the eighth, two on a homer by Joel Youngblood and the tying tally on a passed ball.
