A double by Keith Hernandez and intentional walk to Ted Simmons loaded the bases before George Hendrick delivered a sacrifice fly. Ken Reitz then drilled a two-run double, knocking out Giants starter Bob Knepper.

Bobby Bonds greeted reliever Randy Moffitt with a run-scoring single. Tony Scott was walked intentionally, but pitcher Donnie Moore spoiled the strategy by blasting a two-run double to the right-center field fence.
