Bruce Sutter was the losing pitcher as the Padres erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to post a 9-6 triumph over the Cubs. The Padres trailed, 6-4, entering the eighth, when Dave Winfield walked and went to third on a double by Willie Montanez that brought Sutter to the mound in relief of starter Rick Reuschel.

Winfield came home on a single by Bill Fahey, who was replaced by pinch-runner Paul Dade. After pinch-hitter Jerry Turner received an intentional walk, a single by Kurt Bevacqua plated Montanez and Dade. [The Sporting News]
