Bill Madlock tied the score with a homer in the eighth inning and won the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to enable Kent Tekulve to gain his fifth straight victory as the Pirates defeated the Padres, 4-3. Bill Robinson also homered for the Pirates, who held a 2-0 lead until the Padres rallied for three runs in the seventh, two scoring on a round-tripper by Gene Tenace.

After Madlock's homer in the eighth, Omar Moreno doubled to open the ninth and was sacrificed to third by Phil Garner. The Padres then walked both Dave Parker and Willie Stargell intentionally to load the bases, hoping to set up a double play, but Madlock wrecked the move with a long fly to center field.
