Steve Carlton allowed only four hits and struck out 11 in seven innings but lost to Tom Seaver, who also gave up only four hits in seven innings, as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 5-3. The Phillies' runs came on homers by Bake McBride, Larry Bowa and Mike Schmidt. Bowa hit an inside-the-park blow on which Dave Collins and Sam Mejias collided.

The Reds, who had a homer by Dan Driessen, trailed, 3-2, in the seventh when they scored the tying and deciding runs on a walk to Seaver, a sacrifice, double by Junior Kennedy and error by Bowa, who dropped a two-out fly by Ray Knight in short left field. [The Sporting News]
