Using only 85 pitches, Randy Jones hurled the Padres to a 5-0 victory over the Pirates for his second straight shutout. Jones ran his string to 30 2/3 successive innings without issuing a walk.

The Padres scored three times in the first inning on singles by Dave Cash, Gene Tenace, Dave Winfield and Jerry Mumphrey, whose hit drove in a pair of runs. Pinch-hitter Von Joshua singled home the final two markers in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
