Tom Seaver pitched hitless ball for 6 2/3 innings and wound up with a three-hitter, but all the Reds' ace had to show for his efforts was a 2-1 loss to the Expos. Ellis Valentine ended Seaver's bid for a no-hitter with an infield single in the seventh inning.

Then in the eighth, Gary Carter singled and raced home on a double by Warren Cromartie to tie the score at 1-1. Cromartie took third on the throw to the plate and counted the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Hutton. [The Sporting News]
