A grand slam by Richie Hebner highlighted a six-run fifth inning that propelled the Tigers to a 12-8 victory over the Yankees and sent previously unbeaten Tommy John crashing to defeat. John held a 5-2 lead and retired the first two batters in the fifth before a single and two walks loaded the sacks and brought Hebner to the plate. The veteran third baseman slammed John's first pitch into the seats. A double by Lou Whitaker and single by Champ Summers drove in two more runs in the inning. [The Sporting News] |
