Scoring twice in the ninth inning, the Phillies posted a 9-8 triumph over the Reds. The Phils trailed, 8-7, when Mike Schmidt led off the rally with a double and scored on a single by Greg Luzinski. Lonnie Smith ran for Luzinski and pinch-hitter Del Unser then walked.

Two outs later, Manny Trillo lined a 1-1 pitch to right. Dave Collins broke in on the ball, but it bounced off the heel of his glove for an error as the winning run came across. Reds starter Tom Seaver gave up back-to-back homers to Luzinski and Keith Moreland in the second.
