The Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Padres, 4-3 and 3-2. The Bucs trailed in the opener, 3-2, going into the bottom of the ninth, but Mike Easler hit a tying pinch-homer on reliever Rollie Fingers' first pitch of the inning. Omar Moreno then singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Tim Foli and, after Dave Parker was walked intentionally, scored the winning run on a single by Bill Robinson. Padres starter Randy Jones, who was trying for his fourth straight shutout, had several strings ended: scoreless innings (30), innings without any walks (44) and innings without extra-base hits (37).

The second game was tied, 2-2, going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Bill Madlock drilled a leadoff double, sending Padres starter John Curtis to the showers in favor of Bob Shirley. Matt Alexander ran for Madlock and reached third on a sacrifice by Lee Lacy. After Phil Garner was walked intentionally, Alexander tallied the winning run as Steve Nicosia grounded out.
