A three-run rally in the ninth inning lifted the Padres to a 6-4 triumph over the Pirates. The Padres trailed, 4-3, when the winning rally began with a one-out solo homer by Dave Winfield. Ozzie Smith then singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jerry Mumphrey. Grant Jackson replaced Kent Tekulve on the hill for the Bucs and got Gene Richards on an infield out, but Jerry Turner delivered a single that plated Mumphrey.
