The Padres capped their best offensive show of the season with a grand-slam homer by Barry Evans in the ninth inning and beat the Cardinals, 11-5. The Cards suffered their 10th straight defeat, despite homers by Keith Hernandez and Ted Simmons, when their bullpen failed again.

With the score tied, 5-5, Aurelio Rodriguez led off the Padres' eighth with a single and was on second with two out when the Cards walked pinch-hitter Jerry Turner intentionally. Ozzie Smith upset the move with a single, driving in Rodriguez. An infield hit by Jerry Mumphrey and an error on the play by Hernandez then allowed Turner to score. [The Sporting News]
