Driving in six runs with his first career grand slam and two singles, Rick Cerone paced the Yankees to a 13-5 blasting of the Tigers. Cerone singled in runs in the fifth and seventh innings and belted a bases-loaded homer to highlight a six-run eighth.

The Yankees trailed, 3-1, going into the fifth when Bucky Dent doubled and scored on a single by Bobby Brown. Willie Randolph got a bunt single and a single by Ruppert Jones plated Brown. When right fielder Dave Stegman misplayed the ball, Randolph also scored. Dave Rozema replaced Dan Schatzeder and got the first out of the inning.
