With Richie Zisk defeating his former mates with a homer for the second time this season, the Rangers took the opener of a doubleheader from the White Sox, 4-3, but were shackled on three hits by Rich Dotson in the nightcap as Chicago gained a split with a 5-1 victory. In the first game, Al Oliver led off the fifth with a single and Zisk whacked his 10th homer of the season. Jim Norris then singled, stole second and scored on a double by Jim Sundberg.

Singles by Zisk and Sundberg and a sacrifice fly by Dave Roberts in the seventh produced the final Rangers' run, a necessary tally when Lamar Johnson smashed a two-run homer for the Sox in the eighth. Johnson homered again in the second game, but Chicago secured all the runs Dotson needed in the fourth. [The Sporting News]
