After singling in two runs in an eight-run second inning, Lee Mazzilli later connected for his first homer of the season to lead the Mets to a 9-4 win over the Pirates. The Mets had five hits for eight runs off Bert Blyleven.

Pete Falcone drove in the go-ahead run in the second, but failed to go the five innings required to gain the victory. The Pirates played the game without third baseman Bill Madlock, who was serving the first game of his 15-game suspension after withdrawing his appeal of the fine and suspension. [The Sporting News]
