An error by Johnnie LeMaster permitted pinch-runner Julio Gonzalez to score from second base in the ninth inning, lifting the Astros to a 5-4 verdict over the Giants. Gonzalez ran for Art Howe, who opened the inning with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice.

After an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Bruce Bochy, Gonzalez scored when LeMaster failed to grab Rennie Stennett's throw on a potential double-play grounder by Rafael Landestoy.
