A three-run homer by George Hendrick in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Cardinals to an 8-5 triumph over the Braves and made a success of Whitey Herzog's Redbird managing debut. The Braves had tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Glenn Hubbard before the Cards began their winning surge with a one-out walk by Keith Hernandez.

A single by Ted Simmons moved Hernandez to second and brought on Gene Garber in relief of Larry Bradford. Hendrick greeted the new hurler with a blast over the left field fence. Rookie reliever John Littlefield received credit for his first major league victory. [The Sporting News]
