The Astros took over first place in the N.L. West by winning their seventh straight game, 5-2 over the Cubs. Houston scored three runs in the third inning. Vern Ruhle singled, Rafael Landestoy walked and Terry Puhl singled Ruhle home while Landestoy was thrown out at third on the play.

After a walk to Joe Morgan, a double by Jose Cruz plated two more tallies. Cesar Cedeno hit a solo homer in the sixth and Morgan stroked a run-scoring single in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
