Long-ball blasts by Willie Stargell and Mike Easler propelled the Pirates to a 5-3 triumph over the Reds. Stargell cracked a two-run homer to snap a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and Easler drilled an RBI triple in the fourth and solo round-tripper in the eighth. John Candelaria received credit for the victory while Kent Tekulve, who came on in the ninth after a leadoff homer by Ken Griffey, recorded his eighth save.
