Wretched Cincinnati relief pitching enabled the Cardinals to shade the Reds, 4-3. The Reds led, 3-2, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Mario Soto took over the pitching chores from joe Price, who was making his major league debut.

Keith Hernandez belted Soto's first pitch to deep center for a double and Ted Simmons cracked the next offering into the right field corner for another two-bagger. Simmons moved to third on an infield out and scored the decisive run on a wild pitch. [The Sporting News]
