Wayne Garland hurled his first complete game since June 13, 1979, as the Indians erupted for three runs in the seventh inning to down the White Sox, 5-3. The Tribe trailed, 3-2, when Jorge Orta walked with one out in the seventh and Mike Hargrove lined out.

Ed Farmer replaced starter Ross Baumgarten on the mound for the Chisox, walked Joe Charboneau and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After Toby Harrah walked to load the bases, Cliff Johnson hit a high pop-up that fell for a single when Farmer and catcher Bruce Kimm collided.
