Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Royals shaded the Rangers, 3-2. The score was tied, 2-2, when Willie Aikens opened the K.C. ninth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner German Barranca.

Amos Otis singled Barranca to third and, after Clint Hurdle was walked intentionally to load the bases, Jamie Quirk lofted sacrifice a fly to deliver the winning run.
