A grand slam by Jerry Martin highlighted a five-run seventh inning as the Cubs whitewashed the Reds, 7-0. The Cubs picked up a pair of tallies in the second inning on a two-run single by Ivan DeJesus. Mick Kelleher drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and DeJesus followed with a sacrifice.

A single by Lenny Randle sent Kelleher to third and, after Randle stole second, Bill Buckner was issued an intentional walk. Mike Vail was hit by a pitch to force in Kelleher and Doug Bair then relieved Mario Soto on the mound for the Reds. Martin greeted the new hurler with a blast over the left field wall.
