The Braves swept a doubleheader from the Pirates, winning 3-2 in the lidlifter and 5-4 in the nightcap. The Braves trailed, 2-0, going into the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game, when Dale Murphy stroked a leadoff single. Successive errors by first baseman Bill Robinson and shortstop Tim Foli on balls hit by Chris Chambliss and Gary Matthews loaded the bases. One out later, Bill Nahorodny drilled a double down the left field line to plate three runs.

The second game was tied, 4-4, when Murphy began the Braves' seventh with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Mike Lum. Matthews then hit a grounder to third, but Dale Berra threw wildly into the Atlanta dugout, allowing Murphy to score the decisive tally. [The Sporting News]
