An error produced the winning run as the Orioles won their fifth straight game, 4-3, over the A's. The Birds trailed, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh, but tied it when pinch-hitter John Lowenstein cracked a two-out single to plate Mark Corey. When A's first baseman Jeff Newman tried to get Lowenstein, who broke for second on the throw to the plate, the ball struck Lowenstein in the back of the neck and Al Bumbry raced home with the decisive run.
