Rookie Tim Flannery blooped a single to score Willie Montanez from first base in the sixth inning, enabling the Padres to shade the Phillies, 4-3, snapping the Phillies' six-game winning streak. With two out in the sixth and the game tied, 3-3, Montanez singled up the middle.

Flannery followed with a looping fly that eluded shortstop Larry Bowa and fell into left field. Montanez, running on the pitch, raced home with the decisive run. The Phils had tied the game in the fifth on a three-run homer by Bake McBride. [The Sporting News]
