After a 10-minute brawl interrupted the game in the 11th inning, the Tigers scored two runs and defeated the White Sox, 5-3. Al Cowens, batting in the 11th, grounded to shortstop, but instead of running to first base the Tigers outfielder charged White Sox pitcher Ed Farmer, setting off a melee.

Cowens, acquired by the Tigers from the Angels this season, missed part of last year with the Royals after he was hit in the jaw by a pitch from Farmer, then with the Rangers. Cowens was ejected. When play resumed, Lance Parrish walked and scored the tie-breaking run on a double by John Wockenfuss. Following an intentional pass to Richie Hebner, Champ Summers singled for an insurance tally.
