Breaking out of an 0-for-27 slump, Bobby Bonds cracked a double and homer to pace the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Pirates as Bob Sykes scattered nine hits to record his first complete game in the N.L. Bill Robinson hit a two-run homer for the Pirates in the first inning.

Bonds led off the Cards' half with a double and scored on a single by Garry Templeton, who came home later in the inning on a single by Ted Simmons. Bonds drilled his homer leading off the third for the winning run. [The Sporting News]
