Although getting ninth-inning relief help, Ed Whitson recorded his fourth straight victory as the Giants shaded the Padres, 2-1. The Giants registered both their runs in the fourth inning on three straight hits: a leadoff single by Joe Strain, triple by Jack Clark and single by Darrell Evans. Greg Minton replaced Whitson in the ninth with runners on first and third and one out and prevented the Padres from scoring, picking up his fifth save of the season. [The Sporting News]
