John Stearns and Steve Henderson provided the game-winning hits as the Mets defeated the Phillies in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 5-4. The opener was not decided until the 11th inning when Joel Youngblood singled and scored on a double by Stearns.

In the nightcap, Lee Mazzilli opened the Mets' ninth by drawing a walk. Frank Taveras bunted and both runners were safe when Phils pitcher Kevin Saucier hit Mazzilli with his throw trying for a forceout at second. Mazzilli took third on the error. After one out, the Phils passed Youngblood intentionally to load the bases, but the move failed when Henderson stroked a single to drive in Mazzilli. [The Sporting News]
