With Mike Krukow pitching a three-hitter, the Cubs won the second game of a doubleheader, 2-1, to gain a split with the Cardinals, who won the first game, 8-6, with a four-run rally in the ninth inning. Ted Simmons began the Cards' rally with a double and scored on a single by George Hendrick. After a single by Terry Kennedy, sacrifice by Ken Reitz and intentional pass to Ken Oberkfell, Leon Durham doubled, driving in two runs to put the Cards ahead, but Oberkfell was thrown out trying to score. However, Durham came home with an insurance run when Cubs second baseman Mick Kelleher missed a pop fly by Bobby Bonds.

The Cards' only run off Krukow in the nightcap came in the first inning and was unearned on three Cubs errors. Keith Hernandez, who grounded out, collided at first base with Bill Buckner of the Cubs and both players were knocked out of the game. The Cubs tied the score in the second and won with a run in the sixth on singles by Lenny Randle, Mike Vail and Cliff Johnson. [The Sporting News]
