Combining on a two-hitter, John Pacella and Neil Allen pitched the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Cubs. Pacella left the game with none on and one out in the eighth inning because of an 18-minute rain delay and Allen notched his 14th save.

The Mets scored in their first turn at bat when Lee Mazzilli cracked a leadoff homer and, two outs later, Joel Youngblood walked and raced home on a double by Mike Jorgensen. The Mets added another run in the third on an infield hit by Frank Taveras, single by Claudell Washington and sacrifice fly by Youngblood. The Cubs' hits came in the fifth when Barry Foote doubled and Mike Tyson tripled. [The Sporting News]
