Nolan Ryan became the fourth pitcher in major league history to reach the 3,000 mark in strikeouts, but the Astros' fireballer nevertheless wound up being charged with an 8-1 loss to the Reds. Ryan fanned six, bringing his career total to 3,003, putting him in a class with Walter Johnson, Gaylord Perry and Bob Gibson, who are the strikeout leaders.

Charlie Leibrandt, who pitched a four-hitter for the Reds, batted in their first two runs with a single in the second inning. Dan Driessen homered in the third and Reds then sent Ryan to the showers while scoring three more runs in the fifth. [The Sporting News]
